The Harmony of Clay and Knife: An In-depth Look at Zisha Master Zheng Hongjun and Xiling Seal Art

The Artisan’s Journey

Born in 1973 in Yixing, the "Pottery Capital" of China, Zheng Hongjun’s path to mastery was forged through discipline. A former soldier, he transitioned from the military to the potter’s wheel at age 23, apprenticing under the renowned Master Zhou Zunyan (Research-level Senior Industrial Artist).

Master Zheng is famous for his "Iron-Will" training. During his early years, he was required to hammer 200 clay sheets and 100 clay strips every single day. His teacher would judge his technique simply by the rhythmic sound of the wooden mallet. This rigorous foundation allows him to create teapots that are not only structurally perfect but filled with a "spiritual tension" that is rare in modern ceramics.

The Artistic Collaboration

What elevates a Zheng Hongjun teapot to a "living antique" is the collaboration with Master Yan Dahai. Master Yan is a distinguished member of the Xiling Seal Art Society—the world's most prestigious organization for traditional seal carving and stone engraving.

When Master Yan’s "Jin Shi" (Metal and Stone) engraving meets Master Zheng’s "Aged Raw Ore" (老泥) clay, the teapot becomes a canvas for Chinese philosophy. Each stroke is carved with a precision that honors thousand-year-old traditions, making every piece a unique dialogue between the potter and the engraver.

Excellence in Craftsmanship

Master Zheng adheres to two non-negotiable principles:

  1. Authentic Materials: He only uses Raw Ore (原矿) and Aged Clay (老泥) that has been seasoned for years. This ensures the teapot develops a warm, jade-like patina over time.

  2. All-Handmade (全手工): Unlike mass-produced items, every body, spout, and handle is hammered and joined by hand. This preserves the "double-pore" structure of Zisha, allowing the tea to "breathe" and reach its peak flavor.

Global Reach & Collection

English: From the "Flat Pan" (扁潘) to the "Ancient Weight" (Qin Quan), Zheng Hongjun’s works are now permanently collected by prestigious institutions like the Wuxi Museum.
